  • Adoption of Pyrolytic Boron Nitride coated Graphite crucibles and evaporation vessels for Semiconductor production is contributing to a positive outlook.
  • India and Southeast Asian countries are set to lead the market with considerable demand for Pyrolytic Boron Nitride-based products.

The value of the Pyrolytic Boron Nitride market in 2022 was according to FMI estimated to reach a value of $201.8M (USD).

Sales prospects of Pyrolytic Boron Nitride is expected to witness a steady growth rate of 5.2% and are expected to top a valuation of $333.9M (USD) by 2032.

The p-BN market’s growth was affected by COVID-19. Reduced demand caused the Pyrolytic Boron Nitride Market to experience a CAGR of 1.9% from 2017 to 2021.

Pyrolytic Boron Nitride is used in the production of crucibles for the OLED panel industry – one of the driving factors for growth in the Pyrolytic Boron Nitride Market.

The market is segmented into High Pure and the dominating Ultra Pure PBN segment which is expected to remain most in demand.

Ultra Pure PBN offers various advantages which is commercially utilised in different industrial applications, such as negligible outgassing, the highest dielectric strength and good thermal conductivity.

Sales and production of OLED Televisions is one of the key driving forces increasing demand for Pyrolytic Boron Nitride

The outlook is that Pyrolytic Boron Nitride is expected to witness robust growth due to OLED panels becoming commonplace for the average consumer in both TVs and as of late computer displays both laptops and desktops alike.

Displays with OLED panels typically have low power consumption, high luminance and high contrast characteristics. They also provide full colour expression and low power consumption, and thus are an excellent choice for tablet and phone consumer devices.

Why is Pyrolytic Boron Nitride used in OLED Display manufacturing?

The PBN market report by FMI states that this is “Due to the CVD process, pyrolytic boron nitride obtains an almost perfect layered structure, which makes it a suitable material to make crucibles for the OLED industry.”

This PBN OLED Crucible is applied as the main vessel of the OLED effusion cell. The high purity (99.99%) and low outgassing in high temperature, uniform thickness, good consistency in heating, excellent thermal conductivity and shock resistance plus easy cleaning and reusability make it an ideal choice. It is also inert and has no reaction with acid or alkali. (NC Elements, Pyrolytic Boron Nitride OLED Crucible)

Cathode

Pyrolytic Boron Nitride can also be used in the production of the cathode in OLED displays which is often a form of thin silver film.

Thin silver film is widely used as the cathode in organic light-emitting diode displays and it is generally fabricated using the thermal evaporation method.

This thermal evaporation method includes using a pyrolytic boron-nitride coated graphite boat as the evaporation source. During the evaporation process, there is an inevitable outgassing problem and this creates high viscosity bubbles in melted silver which is undesirable and where PBNs low outgassing comes into play.

Increased adoption of Pyrolytic Boron Nitride coated Graphite for Semiconductor production is contributing to a positive outlook

Graphite is an excellent material for a variety of thermal applications because of its thermal characteristics and chemical resistance. PNB can be applied or deposited as a coating on graphite tubes, wafers and evaporation boats.

Compared with normal boron nitride ceramic, pyrolytic boron nitride (PBN) has a much better purity level. PBN crucibles and other pyrolytic boron nitride products are synthesized on the mold by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process, with BCl3 and NH3 at high temperature and low pressure. The PBN products are extremely pure, as the purity of vapor is easier to be controlled. Most PBN products made from the CVD process have a total impurity of less than 100 ppm, which means the purity is better than 99.99%. With such a high purity level, PBN crucibles are ideal products for semiconductor industries.

According to FMI, the booming semiconductor industry is also expected to propel demand for PBN ceramics. PBN crucibles are ideal for the semiconductor industry because of their extremely high level of purity, as the purity of PBN can reach up to 99.99%.

At temperatures lower than 2500ยฐC the dissociation of nitrogen from PBN is much less than that expected from thermodynamic equilibrium. This permits PBN to be heated to high temperatures in ultra-high vacuum without decomposition. IIIโ€“V and IIโ€“VI semiconductor compounds of very high purity can be grown in PBN because of its purity and thermal stability.

The increasing consumption of PBN in the semiconductor manufacturing process is set to further consolidate the PBN market as production gets back pre-covid levels.

Strong demand for electronic goods during the COVID pandemic led to inflated targets for Semiconductors used in the report, with growth largely set to remain flat during 2023

According to the World Semiconductor Trade Statics (WTSS) mentioned in the FMI report, the global semiconductor market was anticipated to witness a 13.9% increment in 2022 after an astounding 26.2% growth in 2021. This was later down-graded to a 4.4% growth projection on the 29th of November 2022 with growth for 2023 anticipated at 4.1%.
